On March 1, 2004, Kanayama merged with the towns of Hagiwara, Osaka and Maze to form the city of Gero. Gero is located in the Gifu Prefecture, with a population of 33,283. The city is famous for its hot springs. Like its sister city, Ketchikan, its major industry is tourism.
